FULL MUSTANG GT500 COVERAGE @ INSIDELINE.COM: www.edmunds.com It’s something like trying to drive the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 on a roller-coaster, only there are no steel tracks to keep you from slithering off the pavement and ending up in a flaming heap of 540-horsepower Mustang. You can’t even see where you’re going, really. Hard on it, the GT500′s rear tires begin spinning just as you can see nothing but sky in the windshield. You’re on top of the hump at the entrance to Infineon Raceway’s Turn 6, and as your stomach and both right-side tires go weightless, you start a long, long dive to the left, sliding sideways all the way down the hill and around the 180-degree corner. The Shelby GT500 is so torqued up with the cornering force from the low-profile 19-inch tires and the drive from the supercharged V8 that you can practically hear the welds popping in the chassis. But something is different this time — palms are not slick with sweat, tires are not threatening to let go at the most inopportune moment and steering left in order to go right is a joy and not a reflex of self-preservation. The 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 gets 2 mpg more on the EPA highway cycle this year. The Ford engineers are really proud of this. Auf der North American International Auto Show 2004 wurde ein durch die Modelle Ende der 1960er Jahre inspiriertes neu gestyltes Modell im Retro-Design auf dem US-Markt vorgestellt. Eine offizielle Version für Europa ist nicht vorgesehen, allerdings wird der Mustang von vielen Importeuren inoffiziell angeboten.
Das Coupé kam bereits Ende 2004 in zwei Ausführungen auf den Markt. Mit dem 157 kW (213 PS) starken 4-Liter-V6-Motor und dem GT-Modell mit einem 224 kW (305 PS) starken 4,6-Liter-V8-Motor. Die Kraftübertragung auf die Hinterräder wird durch ein Fünfgang-Schaltgetriebe oder eine erstmals erhältliche Fünfstufen-Automatik bewerkstelligt. Seit der Vorstellung des Cabrios 2005 ist auch das Coupé in vier Varianten erhältlich (V6 Deluxe, V6 Premium, GT Deluxe, GT Premium).
Der Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra GT 500 wurde offiziell auf der Detroit Motor Show 2006 vorgestellt. Der GT 500 hat einen 5,4-l-V8-Motor mit Kompressoraufladung erhalten, die Leistung beträgt 368 kW (500 PS).
Seit dem Modelljahr 2006 kann man den Mustang GT Premium mit dem Sonderpaket California Spezial (CS) ausrüsten. Erstmals wurde dieses Modell auf der New York Auto Show präsentiert. Der vier Zentimeter tiefer liegende GT/CS wirkt insgesamt bulliger und verfügt über Lufteinlässe an den Seiten und eine neue Frontschürze mit vergrößertem Kühlergrill. Im Innenraum findet man nun zweifarbige Ledersitze vor. Erinnern soll der Wagen an die legendären Vorgänger aus den 1960er Jahren. Jedoch ist das verchromte Zierzeichen am Kotflügel nicht mehr vorzufinden. Lediglich ein schwarzes Vinyl schmückt diesen Mustang.
Schon angeboten werden allerdings die teils nach Wunsch modifizierten Versionen des Unternehmens Saleen, einem langjährigen Veredler von Ford Mustang. Ford entwickelte und konstruierte von Anfang an ein Cabriolet zusätzlich zur Coupé-Ausführung. Das Ziel dabei war eine steifere Karosserie ohne viel Mehrgewicht für zusätzliche Verstrebungen und ein Minimum an Windeinfall bei geöffnetem Verdeck. Auch das Cabriolet-Dach wurde weiterentwickelt. So verfügt das elektrisch zu öffnende Vinylverdeck erstmalig über ein beheizbares Echtglas-Heckfenster und klappt sich in „Z-Form“ auf.
Ebenfalls neu aufgelegt wurde der Shelby GT/H. Eine bulligere Front kennzeichnet das auf 500 Exemplare limitierte Modell. Wie bereits die früheren Modelle erhält auch dieses Modell eine schwarze Lackierung mit goldenen Streifen (Das H im Namen steht für den Autovermieter Hertz). In beiden Modellgenerationen sollen die Streifen an die Siege in Le Mans erinnern. Ein kleines Rennsport-Accessoire sticht sofort ins Auge: Schnellverschlüsse mit Splintsicherung zum schnelleren Öffnen der Motorhaube. Zusätzlich zu den optischen Extras gibt es ein Sportfahrwerk und einen starken Motor mit 239 kW (325 PS). Nach Beendigung ihrer Mietmission bei Hertz werden die Fahrzeuge versteigert. Momentan wird ein Fahrzeug entwickelt, das den Namen Ford Mustang Cobra Shelby GT tragen soll. Der Wagen soll 415 km/h schnell werden.
Aufgrund des großen Erfolges gibt es zum Modelljahr 2007 eine nicht Hertz-gebundene Variante, die aber jener sehr ähnlich ist: Shelby GT.
Ford hat dem Mustang für das Modelljahr 2009 ein Facelift mit schmaleren Scheinwerfern und ein erstmals erhältliches Panoramadach spendiert.
Seit Frühling 2009 steht der neue Ford Mustang bei den Händlern. Neben einigen anderen Anpassungen an den Stand der aktuellen Automobiltechnik, ist er nun u. a. mit serienmäßigem ESC und 4–fachen Airbags ausgestattet. Das Aussehen der Karosserie orientiert sich an dem klassischen Design, jedoch wurden einige Details, wie z. B. die Motorhaube, geändert. Der Mustang besitzt nun dreigeteilte LED–Rückleuchten sowie optional Xenonlicht in den Frontscheinwerfern. Angeboten werden die Ausstattungsvarianten V6, V6 Premium, GT, GT Premium und Shelby GT 500.
